Specializing on "apples" AppleInsider Internet-resource has dug up the next patent of Apple Computers company. It is aimed on perfecting of touch data manipulation. Last time it concerned touch panels. This time it is a question of a touch panel (also known as touchpad) upgrade.
Registered in August, 2004, this patent suggests the touch panel of a notebook (keyboard) to be extended (widened) up to a traditional platform for operator hands rest. Rationalizers believe that in this way they will be able to unite text typing with efficient cursor positioning. The user would not have to draw his attention from the monitor to the mouse (if compared to the mouse, the standard touchpad is much more comfortable to work with). Thus, all standard mouse operations, such as: dragging, positioning, scrolling, etc. will be executed by arms manipulations.
As it is seen by the developers, the extended touch panel will be able to eliminate purposeless arm movements and will response only to deliberate operator actions. To achieve this, there would be probably necessary to install a special sensor next to the touchpad that will monitor arms position on the platform. By placing the hand in the sensor effective area, we will activate movement recognition.
There is also a solution offering to use capacity touch panels that are capable of recognizing several objects (fingers), their position and movement direction simultaneously and then to associate these objects with some PC commands.
